HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL:
Thursday night the FCHS Lady Mules Volleyball team traveled to Edwards County, looking to bounce back from a tough loss to Carmi on Tuesday night. Unfortunately, the Lady Lions proved to be too tough of a foe, beating the Lady Mules in 2 Sets, 24-26 & 16-25. The JV Lady Mules fell in 3 Sets 25-22, 22-25, & 11-15. The Frosh squad opened the night with a 2-Set win, 25-26 & 25-18. The Lady Mules will look to get back on track Tuesday night at Flora.

HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY:
On Thursday, the Mules and Lady Mules Cross Country teams traveled to Robinson for the Cork Classic Cross Country Meet. The Mules runners finished 3rd out of 19 teams. Medalists for the Mules were Ashton King-8th, Treyton Lewis-22nd, Kanyen Lingafelter-24th, Skylar Bladel-35th, and Jarret Vaughan-37th. The Lady Mules finished 7th out of 11 teams and were led by Medalists Brianna Meeks-30th, Ellanie Vanway-39th, Jaycie Couch-42nd, and Adi Hickey-46th.

The FCHS Varsity Scholastic Team began their season at Marion with a second place meet finish behind Carbondale. Mt Vernon and Centralia finished by the Mules. Allison Breuer and Jedd Wellen each finished with 11 tossups and were named to the all tournament team. Karoline Book also added two tossups.

MLB PLAYOFFS:
The field for the American League and National League Division Series is set. Yankees rookie pitcher Cam Schlittler struck out a dozen batters through eight scoreless frames to lead New York to a 4-0 victory over the Boston Red Sox in Game Three in New York. The Yankees will now face the Toronto Blue Jays in the next round. Elsewhere in the AL, the Detroit Tigers used a four-run seventh inning to take down the Cleveland Guardians 6-3 to advance. The Tigers will now face the Seattle Mariners in the ALDS. In the NL, Michael Busch and Pete Crow-Armstrong combined for six hits and two RBIs while leading the Chicago Cubs to a 3-1 win over the San Diego Padres in Chicago. Chicago will play the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLDS. The Division Series begins Saturday.

(Jacksonville, FL) — The Jaguars are hoping to get a key piece back on defense for a Monday Night Football showdown. Head coach Liam Coen told the media on Thursday that Travon Walker is “day-to-day” after undergoing wrist surgery. The edge rusher got hurt during the team’s win over the 49ers last weekend. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs head into Jacksonville for the primetime matchup to finish Week Five.

(New Orleans, LA) — The Saints are not leaving the Big Easy any time soon. The team has announced a new 10-year lease with the state of Louisiana that will keep the team in New Orleans through at least 2035. The deal puts an end to a lengthy negotiation with the state after the previous lease was not finalized beyond 2030. The Superdome recently underwent a 450-million-dollar renovation and was the host of Super Bowl 59 in February. The Saints have played at the stadium since it opened on August 3rd, 1975.

(West Lafayette, IN) — The number-22 Illinois Fighting Illini will try to get on a winning streak when they visit the Purdue Boilermakers at Ross-Ade Stadium tomorrow. The Illini just squeaked out a 34-32 win over USC at home last Saturday. Illinois is 1-and-1 in Big Ten play and 4-and-1 overall. However, the Illini are 1-and-4 in their last five games against the Boilermakers. Tomorrow’s game kicks off at 11:00AM and can be heard on WFIW-AM 1390 with the pregame show at 10:00AM.

(Undated) — Week six of the college football season is underway. Number 23 BYU will host West Virginia Friday in Provo. Among the premiere matchups on Saturday are number 11 Alabama hosting number 17 Vanderbilt and number 19 Florida State facing number three Miami in Tallahassee. Other top teams that will be in action Saturday include top-ranked Ohio State playing Minnesota at home, number five Texas A&M hosting Mississippi State, and sixth-ranked Penn State heading west for a battle with UCLA.

(Anaheim, CA) — The Ducks are locking up their young star blueliner to the richest contract in franchise history. Anaheim is signing defenseman Jackson LaCombe to an eight-year extension that reportedly carries an average annual value of nine-million-dollars. The deal will begin in the 2026-27 season after LaCombe plays out the final season of the two-year deal that he signed in 2024. The 24-year-old has totaled 60 points in 148 NHL games since being selected 39th overall by the Ducks in the 2019 NHL Draft. He had a career-high 14 goals and 29 assists in 75 games last season.

(Sunrise, FL) — The Panthers are rewarding one of their defensemen. ESPN reports Niko Mikkola signed an eight-year extension on Thursday. The deal is worth 40-million-dollars. The blueliner joined Florida two years ago and played a big role in the team’s back-to-back Stanley Cup wins. Mikkola averages more than 20 minutes of ice time per game with the Panthers.

(Las Vegas, NV) — The WNBA Finals will tip off Friday night in Sin City. The second-seeded Las Vegas Aces will host the number-four seed Phoenix Mercury in Game One. This is the third time that Vegas has made the finals in the past four seasons. The Aces won titles in those two appearances in 2022 and 2023. Phoenix is making its first trip to the championship series since 2021, when it lost to the Chicago Sky. The Mercury have won three championships in franchise history with their last back in 2014. During the regular season, the Aces won three of their four matchups with the Mercury, including both road games.

(Jackson, MS) — Four players are tied atop the leaderboard after the opening round of the Sanderson Farms Championship at the Country Club of Jackson. Eric Cole, Sam Ryder, Garrick Higgo and Danny Walker all shot a seven under 65 in round one. Defending champion Kevin Yu is tied for fifth at five under par. Carson Young, Victor Perez and David Skinns will be among the first group of players teeing off round two.

(Concord, NC) — The NASCAR Cup Series Round of 12 comes to a close this Sunday. The playoffs make a stop at Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Bank of America Roval 400. Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott already advanced to the next round following wins at New Hampshire and Kansas. Ross Chastain, Bubba Wallace, Tyler Reddick and Austin Cindric are all on the bubble and will try to stave-off elimination.
