A vacant home at 1103 South 22nd Street was destroyed by fire Tuesday night, according to the Mt. Vernon Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find heavy smoke pouring from all sides of the house and flames shooting out of the rear roof. Multiple hose lines were deployed as crews fought the blaze defensively until the fire could be brought under control.

No neighboring properties were threatened, and no injuries were reported. The house, which had been unoccupied for about a year, had no active utilities at the time of the fire.

An investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing.

Jefferson Fire provided mutual aid at the scene, while Kell and Waltonville firefighters stood by at the Mt. Vernon Fire Station in case of additional emergencies.

The fire call was received at 6:51 p.m. Tuesday, and firefighters remained on the scene for approximately two hours.
