46-year-old Ryan Best of Fairfield has announced his candidacy for Wayne County Coroner in the 2026 election.
Best has worked in the funeral service industry for the past 18 years at Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield. A lifelong resident of Fairfield, he and his wife of 23 years, April, have three children—Dylan, Ava, and Caden.
In a statement released Tuesday, Best said, “I am committed to serving Wayne County with integrity and professionalism,” noting his deep ties to the community and his extensive experience in death care.
Best said his understanding of the coroner’s role has been shaped by learning from some of the county’s most respected leaders in the position. He trained under the late Bob Johnson, who served 32 years as coroner, assisted Jimmy Taylor during his 24-year tenure, and worked alongside Carrie Dagg and her team during her six years in office.
“These combined 62 years of experience have provided me with invaluable insight and a deep respect for the responsibilities of the Coroner’s office,” Best said. “With this foundation, I am ready to bring compassion, professionalism, and experience to the position.”
Best will seek the Republican nomination in the March 17, 2026 Primary Election. Deputy Coroner Shari Winter was appointed to serve out the remainder of Carrie Jo Dagg’s term who passed away in September.
