Carmi’s annual Kiwanis Corn Day celebration has arrived, and with it come several road closures and traffic detours to ensure the safety of both drivers and pedestrians throughout the week.

Beginning at 5:00 p.m. this (Wednesday) afternoon, Church Street between Main and the alley south of Robinson Street, as well as Robinson between the First Mid Bank entrance and Walnut, will be closed for ride setup. On Thursday, Main Cross between Main and Robinson will be blocked off for the Farm to Table event.

Walnut Street between Main and Cherry will be partially closed starting Thursday night, October 9th to allow for the Main Stage setup Friday morning. A full traffic detour pattern will begin at 3:00 p.m. Friday, October 10. After that time, vendors will begin setting up on Main Street. Officials note that vendors are not allowed to set up prior to 3:00 p.m. due to state regulations and safety concerns.

Any vehicles parked on Main Street between Main Cross and Jessup Street after 3:00 p.m. Friday will be towed at the owner’s expense. Only vendor vehicles will be allowed in this area during setup. The established detour will reroute traffic from East Main Street to Locust, onto Cherry Street, and then Oak Street. Vehicles parked along Locust and Cherry after 3:00 p.m. Friday are also subject to towing.

All detour and no parking routes will be clearly marked with signs. The detour will remain in effect until approximately 2:00 a.m. Sunday, October 12th. For questions about the routes, contact the Carmi Police Department at 618-382-4633.

The Corn Day Parade is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 11th. During the parade, all traffic will be diverted from Main onto Fairground Road and then to Oak Street until the parade concludes.

Organizers remind attendees that alcohol may not be taken outside of bar establishments unless in a secured, restricted area. No alcohol is allowed in or adjacent to streets, alleys, or public sidewalks. Violators may be cited.
