After months of contract negotiations, West Frankfort teachers have taken a significant step toward a work stoppage. The West Frankfort Federation of Teachers, Local 817, voted unanimously Wednesday afternoon to authorize a strike, with all 103 ballots cast in favor out of 114 union members.

Teachers plan to officially file an intent to strike with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board today (Thursday). Under Illinois law, this filing triggers a 10-business-day waiting period before a strike can legally begin.

Frankfort CUSD #168 Superintendent Matt Donkin released a statement acknowledging the union’s vote and intent to strike, noting that school will remain in regular session as bargaining continues. “The Board of Education continues to meet for bargaining sessions with the Teachers’ Union to find an agreement on a contract that best serves our students and community by keeping all of our faculty and staff employed while keeping District #168 on a firm financial footing in the continuing and unpredictable financial times ahead,” Donkin said. He added that more information will be provided to students and families in the coming days regarding any potential schedule changes.

Union leaders say the strong vote sends a clear message of unity and determination among educators, who are seeking what they describe as a fair and respectful contract agreement. Local 817 will make a public statement after officially filing the notice of intent to strike.
