On Friday the FCHS Lady Mules Tennis team competed at the IHSA Sectionals at Centralia and came away with 2 victories on the day. The Doubles team of Mabrey Foster and Wren Braddock had a 1st round bye, won their 2nd round match and then fell in their 3rd round match. Malia Austin won her 1st round Singles match and then lost her 2nd round match. The Doubles team of Kenry Hutchcraft and Marlee Richards got a 1st round bye and then fell in the 2nd round. Carly Fleener earned a 1st round bye and lost her 2nd round match.

HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL:
On Saturday, Edwards County hosted the Edwards County Invitational Volleyball Tournament. The 12-team field included several top teams from Southern Illinois and included: Edwards County, Robinson, Charleston, NCOE, Mt. Carmel, Richland County, Effingham, Oblong, Lawrenceville, Newton, Carterville, and Grayville. NCOE was the tournament winner with Edwards County finishing 2nd, Newton-3rd and Effingham-4th. Edwards County’s Grace Bishop and Grace McCarty were named to the All-Tournament Team.
JUNIOR HIGH CROSS COUNTRY:
The SIJHSAA Class S State Cross Country Meet was held Saturday in DuQuoin and several area schools had runners participating. Jasper’s Kendall Diesel finished 15th out of 154 runners. Keaton Diesel had qualified for state but was unable to run due to an injury. New Hope’s Jayson Rawls finished 14th out of 154 runners while on the Girls side Bristol Weber finished 68th. Cisne’s Leah Angle also participated in the State Meet.

(Toronto, ON) — The Blue Jays and Mariners are heading to Game Seven in the AL Championship Series. Toronto defeated Seattle 6-2 in Game Six at the Rogers Centre to force Game Seven. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his sixth homer of the postseason on a solo shot in the fifth inning, while Addison Barger went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Starting pitcher Trey Yesavage earned the win after tossing seven strikeouts through five-plus innings of two-run ball. The series is now tied 3-3. Josh Naylor homered for Seattle in the setback. Logan Gilbert was tagged with the loss on the mound. The Blue Jays host the Mariners in Game Seven tonight at 7:08pm.. The winner advances to play the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series.

(Undated) — Week Seven of the Sunday football slate is in the books. The matchups kicked off with the last London game of the season when the Rams blasted the Jaguars 35-7 from Wembley. Back in the States, the Eagles got back on track with a 28-22 win at the Vikings while the Broncos scored all of their points in the fourth quarter of a 33-32 home-victory over the Giants. Meanwhile, the 49ers defended home field and grounded the Falcons 20-10 on Sunday Night Football. The week wraps up with a doubleheader on Monday Night Football when the Lions host the Buccaneers and the Texans visit the Seahawks.

(Arlington, TX) — Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is undergoing testing. Washington coach Dan Quinn told reporters that Daniels will have an MRI on his injured hamstring on Monday. The second-year signal caller left Sunday’s 44-22 loss to the Dallas Cowboys after completing 12 of 22 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown, as well as rushing for 35 yards and a score. Daniels missed two games earlier this season with a sprained left knee.

Number seven Georgia overcame a fourth quarter deficit to beat number five Ole Miss 43-35, number eight Texas Tech fell to Arizona State 26-22 in Tempe, number 10 LSU lost to number 18 Vanderbilt 31-24 in Nashville and number 20 Memphis was bested by UAB 31-24 on the road. In other top 25 action, sixth-ranked Alabama beat number 11 Tennessee 37-20, number 15 Notre Dame took down number 21 USC 34-24 at home, and number 14 BYU outlasted 22nd-ranked Utah 24-21 in the Holy War.

(Undated) — The latest college football coaches poll is out. Ohio State remains the top-ranked team in the country followed by Indiana, Texas A-and-M, Alabama and Georgia. Oregon, Georgia Tech and Ole Miss are next while Miami tumbled seven spots to ninth. BYU rounds out the top-10. Louisville is 22nd after knocking-off the Hurricanes while Michigan and Arizona State are 24th and 25th after missing out on the rankings last week. Memphis, USC and Utah all dropped out of the top-25.

(Gainesville, FL) — Florida football is moving on from its head coach. The school fired Billy Napier on Sunday. The Gators improved to 3-and-4 following a 23-21 win over Mississippi State, but Napier had just a 22-and-23 record in four seasons with the program. Receivers coach Billy Gonzales will take over as interim head coach for Florida’s final five games of the regular season.

(Fort Collins, CO) — Colorado State is moving on from head football coach Jay Norvell midway through the 2025 season. The university has fired Norvell following a 2-and-5 start to the season. The 62-year-old Norvell was in the middle of his fourth season with the program and went a combined 18-and-26 while leading the Rams. Defensive coordinator Tyson Summers has been named the interim head coach and the school said that it will immediately begin the search for a new head coach. Norvell will be owed a 1.5-million-dollar buyout after inking a five-year deal in December 2021.

(Houston, TX) — The Rockets are locking up their superstar forward with a new contract. Houston is signing Kevin Durant to a two-year, 90-million-dollar contract extension prior to the start of the new season. The deal includes a player option for the 2027-28 season. Durant was eligible for a maximum contract extension of 120-million-dollars over two years, but sacrificed money on a new deal so that the two sides could give the franchise team-building flexibility. The 37-year-old now holds the record for the highest career earnings in NBA history at 598.2-million-dollars based on current and future salaries. He has a total to three-years and 144.7-million-dollars remaining on his contract.

(Talladega, AL) — Chase Briscoe is the latest racer to reach the Championship Four in the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs. The driver of the Number-19 car edged Todd Gilliland to take home the checkered flag in the Yella-Wood 500 from Talladega. Ty Gibbs, Bubba Wallace and Cole Custer rounded out the top-five finishers as the Round of Eight wraps up next Sunday at Martinsville Speedway.
