Shari Winter has announced her candidacy for Wayne County Coroner, seeking to complete the term of the late Carrie Dagg — a commitment she says she made nearly five years ago at Dagg’s request.
Winter has lived in North Fairfield for more than 24 years and is married to Brad Winter, retired from the Fairfield Police Department, for 21 years. Her two sons, Zac and Fisher Wagner, are graduates of Jasper and Fairfield Community High School. She is a member of Merriam Community Church, has served with Fairfield Rotary for over 10 years, and has been on the Kids In Motion board for more than 20 years.
Winter brings both professional and personal experience, as well as formal and specialized education, to the position. She is a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving 11 years—including four years in uniformed law enforcement and seven years as a Federal Agent with the Office of Special Investigations (OSI).
After leaving the Air Force to care for her father following her mother’s sudden passing, Winter worked as a full-time Coroner’s Investigator in the county east of Dayton, Ohio, for nearly four years until the tragic death of her first husband in a traffic accident. She later pursued graduate studies, completing the coursework for a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration, and also holds an Associate degree in Criminal Justice and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Psychology.
Winter moved to Fairfield more than two decades ago, calling it “a great place to raise kids.” She has previously been a trained and certified EMT, worked as a crisis counselor for over 10 years assisting individuals struggling with suicidal or homicidal thoughts, and served as a substance abuse counselor for more than a year. For the past five years, she has worked as one of Carrie Dagg’s Deputy Coroners.
Her extensive specialized training includes:
Air Force Police Academy
U.S. Army Major Crime Scene Investigations Course (3 months)
U.S. Army Traffic Accident Investigations Course
Air Force Office of Special Investigations Academy (3 months)
St. Louis University Medico-Legal Investigation Course and Advanced Course
“I feel I am an excellent candidate to continue serving as your Coroner based on my more than 20 years of direct experience investigating deaths and my education,” Winter said. “I know the other two candidates and have worked with them on scenes. I have the utmost respect, admiration, and trust in both of them.”
