By Mark Wells Nov 4, 2025 | 11:54 AM

The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) are reminding motorists to stay alert as the state enters peak deer mating season. Deer activity — and the risk of vehicle collisions — increases, especially at dawn and dusk through December.

In 2024, Illinois recorded 14,436 deer-related crashes. Of those, 13,733 caused property or vehicle damage, 698 resulted in injuries, and five were fatal. Locally, counties reporting in include; Wayne County (105), Clay (92), Marion (238), Jefferson (199), Edwards (25), Richland (22), White (98), Wabash (39) and Hamilton (86) crashes in 2024.

Officials warn that if a collision is unavoidable, do not swerve. Instead, try to glance the vehicle off the deer to avoid crossing into oncoming traffic or leaving the roadway.

If you strike a deer, pull over safely, activate your hazard lights, and call 911. Do not exit your vehicle to approach or move the animal.
