A Jefferson County man charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of his wife is set to face a jury in late January.
51-year-old John W. Finney was arrested for first-degree murder on September 1st. Court records show Finney will have a pre-trial hearing on December 10th, a final pre-trial hearing on January 20th, and his jury trial is scheduled for January 27th.
Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Bullard said the investigation began after a concerned citizen spoke with Finney on the phone and received a “strong indication” that a murder had occurred. The witness contacted the sheriff’s office at approximately 8:03 p.m. on September 1st.
Deputies issued an alert for Finney’s vehicle, which was later located just after 9 p.m. at the intersection of Illinois Highways 14 and 148 by a Christopher police officer. Deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office assisted in pulling over the vehicle in rural Du Quoin.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Finney’s wife, 42-year-old Amy J. Finney, was found dead in the hatchback area of a Ford Escape. Sheriff Bullard said preliminary investigation indicates Amy Finney was killed by a gunshot wound during a domestic dispute, with evidence suggesting the murder occurred on Sunday, the day before the arrest.
