The Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA) is urging all Medicare recipients to review their health and drug plans during this year’s Medicare Open Enrollment Period, which runs from now through December 7th. The agency emphasizes that health needs and Medicare plan coverage can change from year to year, making it important for individuals to ensure their current plans still fit their needs and budgets.
Individuals can receive free assistance comparing plan options by contacting the state’s Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP). “Your health needs can change from year to year, and so do Medicare plan costs and coverage. Now’s the time to review your current Medicare coverage to make sure it still meets your needs,” said SHIP Director Sandy Leith. “To help you make an informed decision, the Senior Health Insurance Program uses trained volunteers to offer trusted, unbiased Medicare counseling to Medicare-eligible individuals, their families, and caregivers.”
SHIP counselors are available both in person and online throughout the year, but their services are especially valuable during Open Enrollment, when Medicare participants can join or switch health and prescription drug plans for the coming year. For those who change plans, new coverage will begin January 1st.
SHIP counselors are also alerting beneficiaries that there will be fewer drug plans available for 2026 and that some premiums have doubled. However, four plans will offer $0 premiums. “The right plan for you is the plan that will cover all of your current prescription medications,” said Leith. She advises all Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage participants to carefully read any letters from their current plans detailing changes for 2026, as some may need to switch plans due to non-renewal.
For free help understanding Medicare options and ways to save on costs, individuals can call or visit a SHIP site nearby. Coverage options for 2026 can also be compared using Medicare’s Plan Finder or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE. TTY users may call 877-486-2048. The Medicare Support Hotline is available 24/7, except for certain federal holidays.
