NEW STATE FUNDING FORMULA BOOSTS LOCAL LIBRARY GRANTS

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has led a major expansion of the state’s Library Equalization Aid Grant program, increasing funding eligibility from just 17 libraries serving 77,000 residents to 108 public libraries serving more than 700,000 residents statewide. The change raises the minimum funding level from $7.50 to $17.50 per person in each library’s service area — a move designed to help libraries in low-tax-base communities improve facilities, expand technology, and enhance public programming. The grant program, in place since the 1960s, supports libraries that struggle to meet funding thresholds due to limited local tax revenue. The new formula aims to close those gaps and ensure equitable access to library resources statewide.

Locally, the following libraries will receive funding:

Fairfield Public Library – $18,944.37
Flora Public Library – $14,184.62
Carmi Public Library – $9,533.11
Grayville Public Library – $13,151.27
McLeansboro Public Library – $18,492.01
Mt. Carmel Public Library – $9,648.16
West Salem Public Library – $8,215.58
Eldorado Public Library – $15,062.51

Giannoulias said the funding will help local libraries “modernize their facilities, strengthen community programs, and continue providing essential learning opportunities for Illinois residents.”
