Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias’ Office has issued a response to public officials’ claims surrounding the upcoming closure of the Mt. Carmel Department of Motor Vehicles, calling those claims “erroneous.”

In a press release last Wednesday, the office said the decision to close the facility was based on data showing the site was “not an efficient use of taxpayer dollars” due to a low volume of transactions. Officials reported the location averaged only 15 driver’s license transactions per day.

The Secretary of State’s office stated that despite outreach to local legislators and efforts to find an alternative site, no suitable locations were identified. Surveys conducted on several properties proposed by Mt. Carmel officials found they did not meet operational or management requirements.

All five employees from the Mt. Carmel facility will be transferred to other regional offices, including Lawrenceville, Fairfield, Carmi, and Olney. The Mt. Carmel DMV is scheduled to close November 14th.
