The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office (OSFM) is urging residents to stay alert to the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning as part of National Carbon Monoxide Awareness Month this November.
In 2024, Illinois fire departments responded to nearly 9,900 CO-related calls, while nationwide, more than 100,000 people visit emergency rooms and 1,200 die each year from CO poisoning. Over the past decade, Illinois has averaged 20 accidental CO deaths annually.
“Carbon monoxide is a silent and deadly threat that can strike without warning,” said State Fire Marshal Michele Pankow. “Every home and business should have working CO alarms and maintain all fuel-burning appliances.”
Carbon monoxide, produced by furnaces, generators, fireplaces, and vehicles, is odorless, colorless, and tasteless, making it undetectable without an alarm. Exposure can quickly turn deadly or cause long-term health damage.
Residents are encouraged to check alarms, ensure proper ventilation, and have heating systems inspected before winter.
