A White County jail correctional officer has been suspended without pay following an alleged incident of sexual misconduct involving an inmate. Sheriff Jordan Weiss has not identified the officer or the inmate involved.

The incident came to light during a routine review of security camera footage by jail administrators, who observed inappropriate conduct by the officer. The full-time officer, who has three years on the job, was immediately placed on leave pending a full investigation. Due to the nature of the allegation, Sheriff Weiss has requested the Illinois State Police to lead the investigation.

Megan Valentine, 45, of Albion, a first-degree murder suspect, was transferred from the White County Jail in Carmi to the Wayne County Jail in Fairfield shortly after the alleged incident. Valentine is awaiting trial in Edwards County for the November 5, 2024, shooting death of her husband, Circuit Judge Michael Valentine. She is scheduled to appear in Edwards County Circuit Court on December 19th.

Sheriff Weiss emphasized, “The inmates in our jail are under our care. We take their well-being and safety as our highest priority.”
