Kia and Hyundai have announced recalls impacting thousands of vehicles in the U.S. because of a defect that could lead to fuel tanks melting.
The recall includes more than 250,000 Kia K5 sedans from model years 2021 through 2024, as well as over 85,000 Hyundai Sonata vehicles from model years 2020 to 2023. All affected vehicles are equipped with 1.6-liter turbocharged engines. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the issue stems from a purge control system check valve that may wear out over time.
Owners of the recalled vehicles will receive notifications from Hyundai and Kia with details on the next steps. Dealership technicians will inspect and replace the faulty valve and examine the fuel tank for any potential damage.
