Multiple agencies responded late Friday morning to a serious one-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 that left three people injured and trapped inside their vehicle.
Illinois State Police Troop 9, Fairfield Rural Fire Department, Wayne County Ambulance, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, and three Air Evac helicopters were dispatched at approximately 11:26 a.m. to I-64 eastbound at milepost 109, about one mile west of the Mill Shoals exit.
According to Illinois State Police, an out-of-state van left the roadway and struck several trees, causing extensive damage and trapping the occupants. Fairfield Rural Fire Chief, David Vaughan says first responders worked to free the victims, all of whom were airlifted from the scene to a hospital in Evansville. It was believed the occupants were enroute to Ohio.
The crash forced the closure of I-64 eastbound for about 90 minutes. All lanes were reopened at approximately 12:56 p.m. as the scene was cleared.
