Local and area law enforcement are urging businesses to be vigilant after a recent surge in counterfeit $100 bills being passed in the region.
On Monday, Fairfield Save-A-Lot Manager, Tyler Lampley reported that his store received a counterfeit $100 bill and issued a warning to all Fairfield businesses to be on alert. The fake bills are reportedly easy to identify, as they are stamped with the words “For Motion Picture Purposes Only.”
Counterfeit currency has now been discovered in Fairfield, Carmi, Mt. Carmel, and Olney. With the busy holiday shopping season underway, business owners and staff are urged to carefully inspect all large bills.
Federal authorities have been notified and are assisting in the investigation. Businesses are strongly encouraged to report any suspicious bills to local law enforcement immediately.
