ILLINOIS LAW ENFORCEMENT INCREASES PATROLS TO KEEP ROADS SAFE AS 2025 ENDS

As 2025 draws to a close, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), Illinois State Police (ISP), and law enforcement agencies across the state are coming together to ramp up patrols focused on stopping impaired driving, seat belt violations, distracted driving, and speeding. Whether you’re traveling near or far, the primary goal is for everyone to arrive at their destination safely and start 2026 on the right foot.

“Never drive after drinking alcohol, using cannabis, or taking any other drugs. Driving impaired can change your life—and the lives of others—forever,” said Stephane B. Seck-Birhame, IDOT’s Bureau Chief of Safety Programs and Engineering. “Choose wisely and always have a sober driver.”

According to provisional data from IDOT, as of December 18, there have been 1,123 fatalities from crashes in Illinois this year—10 fewer than this time in 2024.

“Almost all fatal crashes can be prevented,” said ISP Division of Patrol Colonel Chris Owen. “Let’s finish 2025 and begin 2026 safely. Always buckle up, obey speed limits, and never drive impaired or distracted.”

Here are some important tips to avoid tragedy or arrest:

If you’re the designated driver, take the responsibility seriously—your loved ones are counting on you.

Use a community sober ride program, call a cab, use a ride-sharing app, or take public transit if you need a safe way home.

If you see someone about to drive after drinking or using drugs, take their keys and help them get home safely.

This increased enforcement is made possible by federal funds administered by IDOT, with support from ISP and local law enforcement. The campaign aligns with IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” initiative, which reminds everyone of the real-life consequences of impaired and distracted driving, as well as the importance of work zone, pedestrian, motorcycle, and occupant safety.
