Travelers in Southern Illinois received welcome news over the Christmas holiday as major interstate construction projects reopened to traffic.

The Illinois Department of Transportation reports that Interstate 57 from Interstate 24 to Illinois Route 146 has reopened following completion of the concrete overlay project. Only minor work remains, with minimal traffic impacts expected. Final work on the project is scheduled to be completed by spring.

Additionally, the Interstate 64 concrete overlay project from west of Mt. Vernon to the Washington County line has been completed, with all lanes now open. Minor work will continue through the spring, but traffic disruptions are expected to be minimal.
