The Storm Prediction Center in Norman Oklahoma has released preliminary tornado data for 2025, revealing that Southern Illinois experienced over 20 tornadoes last year, with more than six rated EF-2 or higher in intensity. Statewide, Illinois ranks second in the nation for the most tornadoes, trailing only Texas, with a total of 141 reported.

Notably, the second strongest tornado in the United States by wind speed in 2025 occurred in Marion, where an EF-4 tornado was recorded in May.

Despite a near record-breaking year for tornado activity, no tornado-related fatalities were reported in the region.
