A home located across from the Fairfield Community High School Gym at 203 West King Street was heavily damaged by fire early this (Friday) morning.

The Fairfield City Fire Department, Fairfield Rural Fire, Wayne County Ambulance, and Fairfield Police responded to the call at approximately 5:17 a.m. Upon arrival, crews found flames showing from the front and one side of the single-story residence, with the front porch already engulfed. The fire quickly spread to the front of the home.

During a search of the residence, firefighters located and safely removed a dog, which was found to be unharmed. No other occupants were found inside the home. Firefighters were able to extinguish the main fire within about 15 minutes of arrival and then worked to put out remaining hot spots.

There were no utilities hooked up to the residence at the time of the fire. The home was occupied by Russell Draper.

No injuries were reported in the incident. The Illinois State Fire Marshal was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
