By Mark Wells Jan 12, 2026 | 6:00 AM

The Fairfield City Council is set to hold its first meeting of the year on Tuesday, January 13th at 6:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 109 NE 2nd Street, with several important topics on the agenda.

The evening will begin with a public hearing at 5:50 p.m., where bids will be opened for the sale of city-owned property along SW 10th Street. The regular meeting will follow, featuring a prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, roll call, and routine approvals of previous meeting minutes and bills.

Council members will recognize the retirement of Jim Pope, a longtime city employee, before moving into several key legislative items. Among these is an ordinance to authorize the sale and award the bid for the SW 10th Street property.

The council will also consider two significant tax ordinances: one implementing a non-home rule municipal retailers’ occupation tax and a municipal services occupation tax at the rate of 0.75%, and another to lower the city’s business district tax from 1% to 0.25%. These measures are expected to impact both city revenues and the business climate.

A resolution approving a business district redevelopment agreement with Samantha Baker, owner of 6-Juan-8 Bakery, will be up for discussion, along with a presentation on a business tax request from Uniquely Rustique. Both agenda items highlight the city’s ongoing efforts to support local businesses.

Other topics slated for discussion include the city’s storm siren system and a notice of a grant award, which could bring additional resources to Fairfield.

The meeting will conclude with the presentation of the monthly financial report, miscellaneous items, and an executive session if needed.
