The City of Eldorado is mourning the death of Fire Chief Mike McKinnies, one of Southern Illinois’ longest-serving active fire chiefs. The news was announced last Tuesday night.

McKinnies served as Eldorado’s fire chief for more than 40 years and also served the community as a Saline County Board member.

“The fire service is a brotherhood and sisterhood, and the loss of a Chief is felt far beyond department lines. His dedication, leadership, and service to his community and to the fire service will not be forgotten,” Southern Illinois Fire Incidents said in a statement.

McKinnies was known for community involvement beyond emergency response. Last year, he helped raise funds for local restaurant employees who temporarily lost their jobs after a fire.

Harrisburg Mayor John McPeek also issued a statement Tuesday night, saying, “We mourn the passing of Fire Chief Mike McKinnies, a respected Saline County Board member and public servant who made a lasting impact on his community. Our prayers are with his family and the City of Eldorado.”
