WINTER STORM THREAT THIS WEEKEND; ARCTIC BLAST TO FOLLOW

By Mark Wells Jan 21, 2026 | 6:00 AM

The National Weather Service says a significant winter storm is developing for the weekend, with high confidence a major system will impact the Tri-State area and could bring heavy, impactful snowfall.

Forecasters say there’s a growing likelihood that some areas could see four inches or more of accumulation, with parts of southeast Missouri and western Kentucky currently facing the highest risk for the biggest totals.

After the snow, the Weather Service says a brutal blast of arctic air is virtually certain to move in, dropping temperatures to roughly 20 degrees below seasonal averages from Friday through Monday. Daytime highs are expected to struggle to reach the teens or low 20s, with overnight lows falling into the single digits—and in some spots, below zero. Dangerous wind chills are also expected, especially Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service says it will continue monitoring the storm and provide updates as the track becomes more clear.
