ARCTIC COLD BLAST GRIPS REGION AS SCHOOLS REMAIN CLOSED FOR FOURTH DAY

The National Weather Service reports that residents across the region have been enduring temperatures far below normal for this time of year, and that pattern is expected to persist for the next several days. Daytime highs have remained stuck in the 20s about 10 to 20 degrees colder than seasonal averages.

While major highways and interstates have been cleared and are experiencing normal winter driving conditions, most area schools have canceled classes for the fourth consecutive day. The primary concern remains the dangerous state of secondary and rural roads. School officials, including bus drivers, have cited unsafe conditions for navigating buses, especially when it comes to turns and turnaround points.

In response, school districts are working to organize “snow routes” possibly for Friday. These routes would establish designated, safer pickup points, potentially allowing school operations to resume despite ongoing hazardous conditions.

Looking ahead, the weather story is set to intensify as a powerful Arctic cold air mass sweeps into the region starting Friday. Temperatures are forecast to plunge, with daytime highs barely reaching the teens and overnight lows nearing zero. The National Weather Service warns of a prolonged period of subzero wind chills from Friday through Sunday, posing additional risks. Meteorologists are also monitoring the possibility of scattered snow showers Friday into Saturday, which could further reduce visibility, though significant accumulation is not expected. There is some relief in sight, however. Forecasters anticipate that temperatures will begin to moderate and return to more typical values early next week, bringing an end to this bout of extreme cold.
