The Illinois Secretary of State’s office is introducing new online tools to streamline the renewal process for commercial trucking companies’ federal registration credentials. The system, aimed at companies with fewer than 250 vehicles, allows them to complete International Registration Plan (IRP) renewals entirely online.
Trucking firms can now upload their IRS Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290, pay electronically, and receive registration credentials by email within three business days—eliminating the need for in-person visits to the DMV in Springfield.
A key benefit is real-time mileage verification, which flags errors instantly so users can correct them on the spot. Companies can also manage multiple renewals without resetting the system and have flexible payment options, including credit card and e-check. For larger payments, firms are encouraged to confirm with their bank to avoid delays.
The online renewal option is available for existing vehicles only. New vehicle registrations or updates will still require the IRP Supplement process, opening April 1st. Companies can also choose to pay by mail or in person if preferred.
The new system is expected to save time and reduce paperwork for Illinois trucking firms, making federal compliance faster and more convenient.
