ILLINOIS RESIDENTS ENCOURAGED TO CHECK FOR UNCLAIMED MONEY ON NATIONAL UNCLAIMED PROPERTY DAY

Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs is urging residents to visit the ICash website this weekend in honor of National Unclaimed Property Day. About one in four people who check discover missing money or property, such as forgotten bank accounts, rebate checks, or contents of safe deposit boxes.

Since 2015, Frerichs has returned over $2.4 billion in unclaimed property, with nearly 545,000 people reclaiming $294 million in 2025 alone. The average claim is $539.

The Treasurer’s office has streamlined the process, making it easier to claim property online and even added a Spanish-language website. Frerichs also hosts unboxing videos to highlight items still waiting to be claimed.

Residents are encouraged to check for their name and those of family and friends at any time on the ICash website, as finding lost funds can make a real difference.
