The Fairfield Fire Department responded to two separate residential fires within a 24-hour period late Friday night and early Saturday morning.

The first call came in at approximately 11:11 p.m. Friday night when Fairfield firefighters were alerted to an attic fire at a residence in the 200 block of Broadway Street. Fairfield Fire Chief, Andrew Miller says the first truck arrived about five minutes later and observed smoke coming from the attic area of the home.  The occupants were home at the time of the fire but were able to evacuate safely. Firefighters entered the residence, located the fire in the attic, and began suppression efforts. The fire was brought under control in less than 30 minutes. The home is owned by Jeffery McDowell.  The fire was determined to be accidental in nature and appeared to have an electrical origin. Firefighters cleared the scene at approximately 12:20 Saturday morning. Fairfield Fire Department was assisted by Fairfield Rural Fire, Wayne County Ambulance, Fairfield Police Department, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Wayne County 911, Wayne White Electric, and the City of Fairfield Utilities. The occupants are being assisted by WADI.

Less than eight hours later, at approximately 7:51 Saturday morning, Fairfield Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke coming from a residence in the 400 block of West Center Street. First-arriving firefighters observed smoke coming from the eaves of the home. Fire Chief, Andrew Miller says the incident was upgraded to a working structure fire, bringing additional apparatus and personnel from the Fairfield Rural Fire Protection District. Due to the size of the residence and cold temperatures, the call was later upgraded to a second alarm approximately 10 minutes after Fairfield firefighters arrived.  Firefighters located a fire at the rear of the residence and were able to extinguish it, bringing the fire under control in about 30 minutes. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The home is owned by Steve and Trisha Mason, who use the home as a rental house and according to Trisha Mason, was unoccupied at the time of the fire.

Assisting agencies at the Center Street fire included Fairfield Rural Fire Protection District, Wayne County Ambulance, Fairfield Police Department, Wayne County 911, Wayne City Fire Department, Cisne Fire Department, Albion Fire Department, Wayne White Electric, and the City of Fairfield Utilities.

No injuries were reported in either incident.
