IHSA GIRLS CLASS 2A REGIONAL AT MT. CARMEL:
On Monday night, the Fairfield Lady Mules Basketball team kicked off its postseason journey with a matchup against the Salem Lady Wildcats at the Mt. Carmel Regional. After trailing by as many as 10 points at one time, the Lady Mules took their first lead with 4 minutes left in the 4th Quarter. Fairfield and Salem exchanged the lead several times down the stretch with neither team gaining an advantage, forcing the game into overtime. In the extra frame, the Lady Mules were able to outlast the Lady Wildcats for a 71-68 overtime victory. Fairfield was led in scoring by Mabrey Foster with 29 points and Bentli Belva with 20. The Lady Mules now move on to face the host Mt. Carmel Thursday night in the Regional Championship at 6 p.m.

Wayne City Indians standout player, James Walker, moved up to #4 at Wayne City All-Time on the List of career boys basketball scorers for the Indians at Wayne City High School. He now sits behind only Travis Helm, Gary Hutchcraft, and Taj McKinney at Wayne City HS and currently accumulated 1,613 career points while passing by former Indians player, Darren Hurley on Monday night against Webber. Nathaniel Marlow had 25 points for Webber. He now sits at 3,081 career points.

>>Illini Drop In Coaches Poll

(Undated) — The Illinois men’s basketball team is moving in the wrong direction. The Illini dropped three spots from number-seven to number-ten in the coaches poll yesterday. Illinois had a loss against number-25 Wisconsin and a win over Indiana last week. The Illini will try to make their case to move back up the rankings when they visit USC tomorrow night.

 

>>Illinois Hires Ex-NFL Player Tyrone Wheatley As RB Coach

(Champaign, IL) — Illinois football is hiring a former NFL running back to be its next running backs coach. Tyrone Wheatley comes to Champaign following stints as running backs coach with the Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Denver Broncos, and at Syracuse and Michigan. Wheatley was a first-round pick in the 1995 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. He played ten-years in the NFL with the Giants and Raiders, rushing for nearly five-thousand yards and 40 touchdowns.

(Chicago, IL) — The Chicago Bulls will spend the rest of the week gearing up for the final stretch of the NBA season. The Bulls return from the All-Star break with a home game against the Raptors on Thursday. Chicago is a game-and-a-half out of a play-in spot with a 24-and-31 record. Thursday’s game tips off at 7:00PM.

 

>>Pacers Prepare For Home Stretch

(Indianapolis, IN) — The Indiana Pacers will spend the rest of the week getting ready for the final stretch of the NBA season. The Pacers return from the All-Star Break with a road game against the Washington Wizards on Thursday. Indiana entered the break with a two-game winning streak after beating Brooklyn 115-110 last Wednesday, but the Pacers are still the second-worst team in the Eastern Conference at 15-and-40. Thursday’s game tips off at 7:00PM.

 

>>Dolphins Release Tyreek Hill

(Miami, FL) — The Dolphins are cutting ties with the “Cheetah.” The team released Tyreek Hill on Monday. The speedy receiver suffered a brutal knee injury early last season and is now a free agent for the first time in his career. Miami is in full rebuild mode. The Fins also released Bradley Chubb, James Daniels and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine [[ ih-KEEN-ay ]] on Monday. The team is also looking to trade Tua Tagovailoa [[ TUNG-oh-vai-LO-uh ]].

>>Report: Browns To Hire Rutenberg As DC

(Undated) — The Browns have reportedly found their new defensive coordinator. According to multiple reports, Cleveland will hire Falcons defensive passing game coordinator Mike Rutenberg to the position. Rutenberg was previously set to return to Atlanta under new coach Kevin Stefanski, who was fired by the Browns after this season.

(Bronx, NY) — The Yankees have successfully irritated their best player. Aaron Judge told the media on Monday that their first full-squad workout of Spring Training was “brutal.” The reigning American League MVP said they need to start “adding more pieces” because other teams around the league are getting better. New York’s most notable moves were re-signing Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham.

(Tempe, AZ) — Mike Trout is planning to move back to his former position in center field for the Los Angeles Angels this season. Trout will make the move back to center field after he began last season transitioning to a spot in right field and ended up playing a lot as the team’s designated hitter. First-year manager Kurt Suzuki told the 34-year-old over the offseason that he would like to see the three-time American League MVP back in center.

(Raleigh, NC) — The Hurricanes are locking up their breakout goaltender with a long-term contract. Carolina has signed Brandon Bussi [[ BUHS-ee ]] to a three-year, 5.7-million-dollar extension that will keep him with the team through the 2028-29 season. The rookie was acquired by the team on waivers in October and was set to become an unrestricted free agent following the season. He is tied for third in the NHL with 23 wins and second with a 2.16 goals-against average. The 27-year-old had never played in an NHL game prior to this season.

>>Arizona Drops In Latest MCB Coaches Poll

(Undated) — A major shift is taking place in the latest men’s college basketball coaches poll. Michigan is now Number-1 in the nation followed by Houston. Duke jumped up to third while Arizona sunk three spots to fourth. UConn rounds out the Top-Five. Iowa State, Purdue, Gonzaga, Nebraska and Illinois make up the back-half of the Top-10. Wisconsin edged Iowa for the 25th spot as the Hawkeyes were the only team to drop out of the poll.

>>Boston College Legend Bill Donovan Dies

(Chestnut Hill, MA) — The basketball world is mourning the loss of a key figure in the sport. Bill Donovan passed away on Saturday. He was 85. The father of current Bulls head coach, Billy Donovan, finished as the third-leading scorer in Boston College men’s basketball history following his graduation in 1962. Bill averaged more than 14 points per game and was inducted into the Eagles’ Hall of Fame in 2000.

>>US Women’s Ice Hockey Advances To Gold Medal Game

(Milan) — The US women’s ice hockey team is officially going for gold. The Stars and Stripes secured their spot in the gold medal game after dominating Sweden 5-0 in the semifinals from Milan. Abbey Murphy led the way with a goal and an assist. Aerin Frankel turned aside every shot she faced to preserve the shutout. Team USA has guaranteed at least a silver medal for the fifth consecutive Winter Games. The US last won gold in 2018. The Americans will clash with rival Canada for the gold on Thursday.

(Milan) — The US women’s ice hockey team is heading to the gold medal game after shutting out Sweden in the semifinals. The Stars and Stripes will be battling for their third Olympic gold on Thursday. US men’s speed skater Andrew Heo is one step closer to his first Olympic medal after qualifying for the quarterfinals of the short track 500 meter competition. Heo returns to the ice for a chance to finish on the podium on Wednesday.
