The Illinois Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) has expanded its approved food options, giving families more flexibility and culturally responsive choices at the grocery store. The updates, effective February 25, reflect the latest nutrition science and include additional package sizes, new items such as corn masa flour, whole wheat English muffins, and sardines, as well as adjustments to food quantities.
Participants now have more flexibility to substitute items, such as choosing beans or peanut butter instead of eggs, to better match their tastes and cultural traditions. The changes aim to make it easier for families to select foods that best suit their needs.
WIC supports over 175,000 Illinois residents each month, providing nutritious supplemental foods, nutrition education, and access to health services for low-income women, infants, and children under 5. More information on eligibility and enrollment is available at dhs.illinois.gov.
