HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASEBALL:

On Saturday, the Fairfield Mules Baseball team faced off with the Mt. Carmel Golden Aces at Veteran’s Field. The Mules powered past the Golden Aces with a score of 7-3. The Mules jumped on the scoreboard early with a 3-run homerun by Logan Tullis in the bottom of the 1st inning. Fairfield’s lead increased to 5-0 after a 2-run double by Ian Puckett in the bottom of the 2nd. Jesse King and Braxton Marshel each added RBI’s while Breychan Kovacich went 1 for 2 with 2 walks. Ian Puckett picked up the win going 4 innings giving up 3 hits and 0 earned runs with 6 strikeouts.

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS SOFTBALL:
The Lady Mules Softball team played a doubleheader on Saturday at DuQuoin versus DuQuoin and Crab Orchard. In the first game against DuQuoin, Fairfield built an early 6-run lead but had to hold off a late rally by DuQuoin to pull out the 8-7 victory. The Lady Mules were led by Kenry Hutchcraft who went 2-4 with a double and 3 RBI’s, Kaylee Musgrave who went 2-3 with a double, Kiersten Vaughan 1-2 with a double and RBI, and Alivia Rice who went 1-3 with 2 RBI’s. Kiersten Vaughan started the game for the Lady Mules, going 4 innings with 0 earned runs and 5 strikeouts. Hutchcraft picked up the victory for Fairfield.

In the second game versus Crab Orchard, the Lady Mules picked up the 3-2 victory after falling behind in the top of the 1st inning. Fairfield was led by Kiersten Vaughan who went 2-3 with a triple, Malori Simpson who went 1-3 with a double, and Serenity Dagg who went 1-3 with an RBI. Alivia Rice picked up the win for the Lady Mules going 7 innings giving up 2 hits with 2 earned runs and 16 strikeouts.

Jordan Walker homered in the victory, while Michael McGreevy struck out five and allowed just one run on three hits in five innings. The Cardinals improved to 17-and-9 in Grapefruit League action. The St. Louis Blues got back in the win column with a 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on Saturday. Pius Suter and Pavel Buchnevich both scored in the second period, while Jordan Kyrou lit the lamp in the third. The Blues are in seventh place in the Central Division with 67 points. St. Louis hosts Washington tomorrow night.

(Undated) — The Sweet 16 field is set in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Sunday’s action was highlighted by ninth-seeded Iowa upsetting top-seed Florida in the South Region. In other top games, one-seed Arizona toppled nine-seed Utah State, second-seeded teams UConn, Purdue and Iowa State each advanced, and fifth-seeded St. John’s knocked off four-seed Kansas at the buzzer. The Sweet 16 begins on Thursday with four matchups. Purdue will face Texas, Nebraska takes on Iowa, Arizona challenges Arkansas, and Houston will battle Illinois. The three-seed Illinois Fighting Illini picked up a victory with a 76-55 win over 11-seed VCU in the Second Round on Saturday.

(San Diego, CA) — Kansas’ two-time national champion head coach Bill Self is unsure about his coaching future following his team’s elimination from the NCAA Tournament. Self said following the Jayhawks’ 67-65 second-round loss to St. John’s that he has not yet made a decision about his future on the sidelines. The 63-year-old said that his decision will not be based on any on-court factors but rather on his health. Self has dealt with several health-related issues in recent years.

(Boston, MA) — The Timberwolves put a halt to the Celtics’ winning streak after picking up a 102-92 victory at TD Garden. Bones Hyland led the T-Wolves in scoring with 23 points off the bench. Rudy Gobert led all players with 14 rebounds. Minnesota has now won three of its last four games. Jaylen Brown led all scorers with 29 points for the C’s. Boston’s winning streak is over after four games.

(Washington, DC) — The Avalanche came from behind to beat the Capitals 3-2 in overtime. Gabriel Landeskog and Nicolas Roy each scored in the third period before Brock Nelson scored the game-winner for Colorado in the extra frame. Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 20 of the 22 shots he faced in net. The Avs have won back-to-back games to improve to 46-13-and-10 this season. Justin Sourdif and Alex Ovechkin found the back of the net for Washington. Ovechkin’s tally was the 1,000th of his career. Logan Thompson allowed three goals on 24 shots. The Caps dropped to 35-27-and-9 with the loss.

(New York, NY) — Gabriel Vilardi helped lead the Jets past the Rangers in their 3-2 win in a shootout from Madison Square Garden. Vilardi began the game with an assist on the first goal of the game, and scored his 27th goal of the season. His goal in the shootout clinched the victory for Winnipeg, which now has 70 points after snapping a three-game skid. Dylan Garand stopped 35 of the 37 shots he faced in his NHL debut for New York, which now has 65 points.

(White Bear Lake, MN) — A National Hockey League reporter died in a house fire over the weekend. The NHL confirmed the death of Minnesota Wild reporter Jessi Pierce and her three children on Sunday. The White Bear Lake Fire Department reported a fatal house fire in the town and the deaths of an adult, three children and a dog. In an online obituary NHL.com called Pierce “a fixture on the area’s sports scene.” The Minnesota Wild remembered Pierce as “a kind, compassionate persona that cared deeply about her family and those around her.”

>>Suzuki To Miss Start Of Cubs Season

(Mesa, AZ) — The Chicago Cubs will be without one of their top sluggers on Opening Day. Seiya Suzuki will miss the start of the season with a knee sprain. Suzuki suffered the injury while trying to steal a base for Japan in the World Baseball Classic. The Cubs haven’t decided whether or not Suzuki will begin the year on the injured list yet. In other club news, the Northsiders beat the Brewers 12-0 in Spring Training yesterday.

(Glendale, AZ) — The Chicago White Sox have a new back-up catcher. The team signed Reese McGuire to a one-year deal over the weekend. McGuire had opted out of a minor league deal with the Brewers on Saturday. The 31-year-old spent last season with the Cubs. He hit .226 with nine home runs and 24 RBI’s in 44 games last year. In other team news, the Southsiders lost to Seattle 4-2 in Spring Training yesterday.

(Philadelphia, PA) — The Phillies continue to lock-down their starting rotation. The team signed Cristopher Sanchez to a six-year extension. ESPN reports the new deal kicks in next season and is worth more than 100-million in new money. The 29-year-old went 13-and-5 last year with a two-point-five ERA and struck out a career-high 212 batters. Philly extended fellow starter Jesus Luzardo earlier this month.

(Palm Harbor, FL) — Matt Fitzpatrick is his third career Tour victory after finishing atop the leaderboard at the Valspar Championship in Palm Harbor. Fitzpatrick won the tournament by one stroke at 11 under par. David Lipsky finished in second at 10 under and Jordan Smith was third at nine under par. Xander Schauffele, Marco Penge and Sungjae Im finished tied for fourth at eight under. Defending champion Viktor Hovland was unable to make it past the cut.

>>Tyler Reddick Re-Establishes Dominance With Darlington Win

(Darlington, SC) — Tyler Reddick is re-establishing his NASCAR Cup Series dominance. The driver of the Number-45 car overcame early electrical issues to take home the checkered flag in the Goodyear 400 from Darlington Raceway. It was his fourth win of the season while Brad Keselowski, Ryan Blaney, Carson Hocevar and Austin Cindric rounded out the top-five finishers. The field heads to classic Martinsville Speedway next Sunday.
