John “Jake” Wakey, Carterville High School assistant football coach and teacher, has been placed on paid administrative leave amid a criminal sexual abuse investigation. School records show Wakey was previously suspended in 2009 for inappropriate texting with students, allowing unsupervised late-night visits to his home, and drinking in front of students before coaching a game. He was not charged at the time.
Wakey joined the district in 2003 after serving court supervision for providing alcohol to minors. The current investigation began after a former student came forward, leading to subpoenas for school records. Wakey has not been charged and has not commented publicly.
The district received several anonymous tips over the years about inappropriate texts, including recent reports in 2022 and 2025. The district is now conducting its own investigation and cooperating with law enforcement and state education officials.
Parents have expressed concern over the district’s response time after an initial FBI tip in 2024. School leaders say they are reviewing policies and increasing staff training to improve student safety. Wakey remains on paid leave, receiving his salary, while the investigation continues.
