A dream that began nearly five years ago for Chrissy Keyser has finally become a reality with the opening of “The Sharing Shed” on the north side of K&M Carpets in Fairfield, next to Casey’s General Store on South First Street. The Sharing Shed is a 24-hour, take-what-you-need, leave-what-you-can pantry designed to support anyone in need in the community.
Chrissy first envisioned the project before the COVID-19 pandemic, inspired by blessing boxes in larger cities. She wanted to create something larger and more impactful than a typical small pantry box. Although early grant applications were denied and the project was put on hold, everything changed earlier this year when two women visited her workplace, K&M Carpet Store. During their conversation about helping others, Chrissy shared her long-held vision. One of the women, Amy Hart from WADI, explained that their organization often had leftover food but no way to distribute it. The other woman, Valerie Brown of Hope Ministries, offered to pray with Chrissy over the project, giving her the encouragement to move forward.
With the help of her husband Randy and his brother, both skilled in construction, the Sharing Shed was built using available materials. It may not be elaborate in appearance, but it serves its purpose—providing a fully stocked, unlocked resource center accessible all day, every day. Donations from WADI, local supporters, and anonymous contributors keep the shelves filled with food, drinks, hygiene items, and even pet supplies.
Chrissy’s vision for The Sharing Shed is rooted in the belief that anyone—regardless of their circumstances—deserves help, and there are no restrictions or requirements for using the pantry. Community members are encouraged to visit at any time, take what they need, and, if able, leave what they can. Monetary donations can be brought inside K&M Carpets, and anyone wishing to contribute or ask questions can contact Chrissy via Facebook or at 618-516-1748.
The Sharing Shed officially opened its doors Monday, inviting the community to support and benefit from this new resource. Chrissy hopes her story will inspire others to lend a hand and continue spreading kindness throughout Fairfield.
