AMERICAN AIRLINES SELECTED AS NEW CARRIER FOR VETERANS AIRPORT OF SOUTHERN ILLINOIS

Travelers in Southern Illinois can soon expect to fly with one of the world’s most recognized airlines. The Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois at Marion has unanimously approved American Airlines as its new carrier, replacing Contour Airlines when its three-year contract expires in July.

The decision, made by the airport board on Thursday, March 19th, follows a month of deliberations in which four airlines submitted a total of seven bids for the coveted contract. Airport leaders say American Airlines was the clear choice, citing its global reputation and the potential to significantly increase passenger numbers.

A major highlight of American Airlines’ proposal is the possibility of daily round-trip flights between Southern Illinois and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport—a development airport officials describe as a “game-changer” for the region.

Airport Director Doug Kimmel noted that American’s proposal projects an increase of 9,000 additional passengers per year compared to the other bids. With this growth, Kimmel said travelers can expect not only more frequent service—12 roundtrips a week—but also larger planes. American Airlines will operate 65-seat regional jets, more than doubling the capacity of the current 30-seat aircraft.

Kimmel emphasized that the decision was made after carefully considering public feedback and all submitted proposals. “It’s been our due diligence to determine what will meet the most passengers’ needs,” he said. “We know it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution, but bringing American Airlines to Southern Illinois will offer greater opportunities for both local travelers and those coming into our region.”

The proposal recommending American Airlines has been submitted to the U.S. Department of Transportation, with final approval expected by late April. If approved, the new service is set to begin later this year.
