State Representative Dave Severin (R-Benton) is intensifying his opposition to Illinois’ Sanctuary State policies, citing recent violent incidents involving illegal immigrants as evidence of what he describes as “lawlessness and crime” tied to the legislation. Severin, who is sponsoring HB 1317 to repeal the TRUST Act—the law that established Illinois as a Sanctuary State—is now collecting signatures on an online petition urging lawmakers to take action.
“I have been disgusted time after time to see illegal immigrant criminals released back onto our streets to commit further crimes when these individuals should have been reported to the Federal government to deport them,” Severin said.
Severin points to the recent killing of Sheridan Gorman in Chicago, allegedly by an illegal immigrant, as a tragic example of what he sees as the failures of current state policy. He argues that the rights of illegal immigrants are being prioritized over those of Illinois citizens, endangering public safety.
“I believe the people of Illinois are tired of seeing the rights of illegal aliens prioritized over the safety of Illinois citizens,” Severin said. “That’s why I’m sponsoring a petition to gather signatures to send the message to the Governor and the Supermajority Democrats in the House and Senate that ‘We the People’ want the Sanctuary State policies ended in Illinois.”
