By Mark Wells Apr 7, 2026 | 11:56 AM

With warmer weather on the way, it’s time to dust off those bicycles and get ready for safe rides. Edwards County 4-H, Bone Gap Cardinals 4-H Club, and Love West Salem are teaming up to present Bike Safety Day on Saturday, May 9th from 2 to 4 p.m. at the First Christian Church in West Salem.

Youth up to age 18 are invited to bring their bikes for a free inspection, which will include checks of pedals, reflectors, brakes, chains, handlebar grippers, and seats. On-the-spot repairs will be made if needed to ensure every bike is in top condition. The event also features a bike safety program led by a local police officer, fun giveaways, and snacks for all participants.

This event is open to the public and youth do not need to be 4-H members to attend. Registration is encouraged and can be completed online at go.illinois.edu/BikeSafety.

For questions or to request accommodations, contact the Edwards County Extension Office at 618-445-2934 or email Debra Collier at djc@illinois.edu. Early requests for accommodations are recommended.
