On March 25th, 168 students sponsored by 24 electric and telephone cooperatives from across Illinois gathered at the State Capitol in Springfield for Youth Day—an annual event that introduces young leaders to state government and the cooperative principles that support their communities. The day provided opportunities for students to meet elected officials, tour historic sites, and experience the workings of state government firsthand.

Students representing Wayne-White Electric Cooperative included Kami James and Reece Whitley from Carmi-White County High School; Mikkie Hearle and Ryan Strange from Cisne High School; Ava Isle from Fairfield Community High School; Macie McArthy and Jalynn Phillips from Norris City-Omaha-Enfield High School; and Emma Griswold and Alayna White from Wayne City High School.

The Wayne-White students had memorable interactions with State Senator Terri Bryant and Representatives Dave Severin and Patrick Windhorst. In a chance encounter, Representative Severin joined the group in the Stratton Office Building elevator, then invited them to his office for a conversation.

Along with meeting state officials, students learned more about their cooperative’s role in their communities, toured the State Capitol, and visited the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

During lunch, Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs addressed the students, sharing his journey from small-town Illinois to state government and encouraging them to pursue challenging opportunities, follow their passions, and become lifelong learners.

Participants also met Micah Anderson, the 2025-26 Illinois Youth Leadership Council representative sponsored by Adams Telephone Cooperative, who spoke about his experiences representing Illinois at the Youth Day and Youth Tour in Washington, D.C.

In addition to Youth Day, two Wayne-White students—Jalynn Phillips and Reece Whitley—were selected to participate in the annual Youth Tour to Washington, D.C., from June 15 to 22. They will join peers from across the state to visit historic sites, learn about cooperative business models, and develop leadership skills.
