An accident involving a semi-truck carrying anhydrous ammonia led to the evacuation of Johnsonville Grade School on Tuesday afternoon as a precautionary measure.
The incident occurred when a semi operated by Dabney Trucking of Dixon, Illinois, missed its turn in front of the school. As a result, the rear wheels of the tanker slipped off the roadway and into a ditch. Concerned for student safety, school officials evacuated the building around lunchtime, transporting all students to Cisne Middle School.
A tow company from Mt. Vernon was called in to safely lift the loaded tanker back onto the road. After the situation was resolved and authorities confirmed there was no leak of anhydrous ammonia, students were returned to Johnsonville School at approximately 1:45 p.m.
No injuries were reported in the incident, and officials confirmed that no hazardous material escaped from the tanker.
