BALD KNOB CROSS TO OFFER ELEVATOR ACCESS WITH NEW “TOP OF THE CROSS EXPERIENCE”

A decades-old dream is finally coming to fruition at the Bald Knob Cross of Peace at Alto Pass in Union County, as officials announce a major advancement in welcoming visitors to the summit of this iconic Southern Illinois landmark.

The monument’s Board of Directors has unveiled plans for the “Top of the Cross Experience,” a new initiative that will see the installation of an interior lift, transporting guests to an observation deck near the top of the 111-foot-tall structure.

This ambitious project is supported by a $200,000 matching tourism grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. With the total cost of construction projected to surpass $500,000, organizers emphasize that additional funding and community support will be essential to complete the effort.

The idea of allowing visitors to ascend inside the monument dates back over 70 years, to founder Wayman Presley and the original visionaries of Bald Knob Cross, who first imagined a tram system offering panoramic views of the surrounding region. While the concept was included in early blueprints, it was never realized—until now.

According to project leaders, construction on the lift is set to begin soon. The design will maintain the Cross’s iconic exterior, with only minimal visual changes. Window portals will be tinted white to ensure they blend seamlessly with the existing structure.

Once finished, the lift will be fully wheelchair accessible and carry visitors to an enclosed observation deck approximately 100 feet above the ground. The 75-second ride will feature a brief historical presentation, and at the summit, guests will enjoy sweeping vistas of the Shawnee National Forest, Bald Knob Wilderness Area, the Mississippi River Valley, and portions of three neighboring states. An inspirational message will be shared on the descent.

Officials stress that the installation has been thoroughly reviewed by structural engineers and state agencies, who have confirmed the project can be completed safely without compromising the monument’s integrity.

The project team includes Project Manager Steve McKeown, Ron Stork Construction of Sparta, Kreher Engineering, and Beta Max Hoists of Florida.

Leaders also affirmed that the mission of Bald Knob Cross remains unchanged: to maintain and develop the site in ways that reflect and promote Christian values.

Because the state grant requires matching funds, community support and donations will be vital to transforming this long-held vision into a reality for future generations of visitors.
