The Edwards County Republican Party held its convention on March 17th at 6:30 p.m. Outgoing Chairman Sherry Hinds opened the meeting with a brief update and an overview of the convention’s purpose.
Edwards County Clerk & Recorder Melanie Knight then administered the oath of office to Steve Smith, who was elected as Albion 2 Precinct Committeeperson in the General Primary Election. As the sole candidate for the post, Smith will now serve as Chairman of the Edwards County Republican Party.
In the coming 30 days, Smith will appoint additional committeepersons to fill current vacancies. During the meeting, nominations for the statewide Republican Central Committee were discussed, with Smith set to cast votes for Rhonda Belford later that evening.
Other topics included increasing local engagement, participating in parades, serving popcorn at the Edwards County Fair, getting out the vote for the November General Election, and planning possible fundraisers. Smith emphasized support for Gubernatorial Candidate Darren Bailey and continued assistance for County Clerk Melanie Knight as key priorities.
The party currently has three open precincts. Anyone interested in becoming a precinct committeeperson or helping the Edwards County Republicans in any capacity is encouraged to contact Steve Smith at 618-445-2065.
