Wayne County 4-H teamed up with Frontier Community College recently to host the inaugural Health Fest for seventh-grade students across Wayne County, focusing on the importance of physical and mental health while introducing potential career paths in the healthcare field.

Organizers say junior high is a critical time for students, as choices made during these years can have lasting impacts. The event aimed to provide hands-on learning experiences that encourage healthy decision-making and career exploration.

“This event is a great example of what can happen when education and community partners come together to create meaningful, hands-on learning experiences for students,” said Carrie Halbert, director of student engagement and recruitment for Illinois Eastern Community Colleges. “We are proud to collaborate with University of Illinois Extension to give Wayne County seventh graders a closer look at careers in healthcare.”

Students visiting the FCC campus were introduced to several healthcare professions, including phlebotomy and emergency medical services, and were given tours of the college’s nursing lab.
Participants had the chance to practice CPR, explore an ambulance, examine blood samples under a microscope, and interact with simulation tools used in nursing education.

Health Fest also incorporated lessons from the 4-H Health Rocks program, covering topics such as the dangers of smoking and vaping, the effects of drugs and alcohol on decision-making, building positive relationships, and managing stress.

“Health Fest proved to be extremely beneficial for our students,” said Wayne County 4-H Program Coordinator Ryan Littlejohn. “Feedback from both teachers and students showed strong support for the event and its impact, particularly in raising awareness and interest in health-related topics.”

Organizers say the partnership with Frontier Community College helped reinforce classroom lessons while giving students a better understanding of real-world career opportunities.

Illinois Extension and Wayne County 4-H also expressed appreciation to FCC staff and facilitators who helped lead sessions. Educators interested in 4-H school programs can contact the Wayne County Extension Office for more information.
