***UPDATE***
All lanes of eastbound Interstate 64 over the Wabash River will be closed Wednesday night for inspection and maintenance work, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). The closure was originally scheduled for Monday night but due to extended inclement weather, the closure has been rescheduled
The closure will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday and continue into the early morning hours of Thursday. IDOT officials have not specified how long the work will take.
A marked detour will be in place to guide motorists around the closure. Eastbound drivers will have two main alternate routes to cross the Wabash River: Route 15 at Mount Carmel or Route 141 west of Mount Vernon, Indiana.
Lunda Construction Company of Wisconsin is the contractor for the $136 million project. Upon completion, both existing bridges over the Wabash will be removed and replaced with a new bridge. The project will also include the construction of 8,339 feet of new roadway across the river.
Motorists are encouraged to plan their routes accordingly and allow extra travel time during the closure.
