The Board of Education for Pinckneyville Community Consolidated School District 204 has accepted the resignation of Superintendent Jerry Travelstead following an investigation into allegations circulating within the community.

Matthew Hickam, Regional Superintendent for ROE 30 Regional Office of Education, confirmed to local media late Thursday night that the resignation was approved during a special board meeting.

The decision comes days after Travelstead was placed on administrative leave as the district began reviewing what officials described as “allegations and rumors” within the community, including reports of inappropriate communication with a student. Allegations involve private messages claiming Travelstead communicated with a juvenile on at least two occasions through a social media platform.

School officials have emphasized that Travelstead is presumed innocent unless proven otherwise.
Hickam has since stepped in as acting superintendent while the district determines its next steps. He indicated an additional statement is expected to be released.

Prior to the resignation, a public board meeting drew significant attention, with dozens of community members attending to voice concerns and call for Travelstead’s removal.
