ILLINOIS UNEMPLOYMENT RATE RISES TO 5.1 PERCENT IN MARCH

Illinois’ unemployment rate increased slightly in March, rising to 5.1 percent from 5 percent in February.

According to state labor data, the March unemployment rate was also higher than the 4.6 percent recorded in March 2025.

Despite the increase in unemployment, total nonfarm payrolls posted monthly gains, rising by 8,400 jobs during March.

Industry sectors showing the largest job increases included private education and health services, professional and business services, and government employment.

Meanwhile, the largest monthly job losses were reported in trade, transportation and utilities, financial activities, and manufacturing.

Compared to one year ago, total nonfarm payroll jobs in Illinois were down by 4,300 positions.
