Surrounded by family, Ann Marie (Karcher) Burke, 67, of McLeansboro, Illinois, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 5, 2026.
After a short but courageous battle with cancer, Ann faced her illness with remarkable strength, grace and dignity.
Ann was born on April 6, 1959, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, to Clarence and Wilma Karcher. She was a graduate of McLeansboro High School, Class of 1977. She worked as an abstractor for Bonan & Bonan in McLeansboro then as an independent contractor as a landman/abstractor. Ann married the love of her life, Don Burke, on June 28, 1980 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Piopolis. Together, Ann and Don built a life rooted in faith, family and community.
They owned and operated the McLeansboro Space Center for over 33 years. They also owned and operated Don Burke Auction Service until 2024. Ann & Don were members of the former Hamilton County Bottle Club, assisting with community flea markets. They were active members of the Hamilton County Chamber of Commerce. In 2002, they were honored as recipients of the Ted Satterfield Award. Ann and Don were instrumental in organizing the volunteer committee for Kids Kingdom in McLeansboro. They shared a passion for volunteering with the Sisters of St. Benedict in Ferdinand, Indiana and were devoted members of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Enfield, Illinois. They took great pride in being a mentor, holding the role of godparents to seven godchildren.
Ann faithfully served her community in many roles. She was a past board member of the Hamilton Memorial Hospital Foundation, active in the PTA and served as a board member of TRADE. Ann was a member of St. Patrick’s Ladies Group UP and Women of the Rule in Ferdinand, Indiana. Ann found great meaning in bringing communion to the homebound.
Ann embraced life with joy, energy and a sense of fun that was uniquely her own. She enjoyed driving her blue Mustang. A true enthusiast of nature’s hidden treasures, Ann enjoyed wandering the woods in search of morel mushrooms. She never passed up an opportunity to play a game of Pinochle or Canasta with family and friends. She enjoyed pickleball, ping-pong and her 6 a.m. CrossFit classes. Ann was a culinary queen whose kitchen was the heart of her home. Her recipes were more than just meals; they were a taste of her warmth and generosity. She was affectionately known as “Nana” famous for her “Nana Ann’s” homemade pretzels.
A lifelong resident of Hamilton County, Ann was the epitome of hometown pride, rarely missing a local parade and always knowing the best spot around the square to watch the festivities. She treasured travel and adventure, including trips to the Dominican Republic and an Alaskan cruise in 2025 that she joyfully said she was “finally old enough” to take.
Ann had a love for classic country music, music by Donny Osmond and the Carpenters. She loved reading, particularly the collection of Danielle Steel novels. She had a passion for collecting beautiful pottery and loved finding unique pieces. Ann was thrilled to fulfill a lifelong dream of being in the studio audience in California for The Price is Right. She found joy in life’s simple pleasures: popcorn, pizza, bottled Ski, a full moon, fireworks, planting flowers, especially daffodils and May Day picnics. She loved watching birds especially, bluebirds and martins and the winter equinox. She was known for her fondness of nostalgia, and she loved watching the original Cinderella movie. Ann was the leader of the “Ooga Booga Club.” She took pride in being part of the last graduating class at Piopolis Grade School and her Presidential Physical Fitness achievements in grade and high school. She loved spending time with family and friends and making memories that will be cherished forever.
She is survived by her devoted husband, Don Burke, her daughter, Natalie (Dalton) Webb; her cherished grandson, Ira Webb; her son, Nicholas (Haley) Burke; and her grand-dog, Beatrix. She is also survived by her loving mother, Wilma Karcher; her siblings, Alan (Madonna) Karcher, Susan (Keith) Johnson, Mark (Irma) Karcher, Scott (Lorrie) Karcher and Lisa (Mark) Miller; her brother-in-law, Lon (Barbara) Burke; sisters-in-law, Sandy Burke and Jackie Burke; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Known for her warmth and hospitality, she leaves behind great memories and lifelong friendships.
She was preceded in death by her father, Clarence Karcher; her in-laws, Bill and Carlene Burke; and her brothers-in-law, Willie, Ron and Bob Burke and nephew, Luke Miller.
The family kindly requests no flowers or gifts. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Benedict in Ferdinand, Indiana and will be accepted at the funeral home.
Visitation will be held Friday, May 15th from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro, Illinois. An additional visitation will be held Saturday, May 16th at 9:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Enfield, Illinois followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Fellowship meal to follow at the Big Red Barn in McLeansboro.
Ann’s life was a beautiful reflection of love, faith and service. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved her.
