SIJHSAA CLASS S STATE TOURNAMENT AT MURPHYSBORO:
The SIJHSAA Class S State Tournament was held Saturday at Murphysboro with several local athletes finishing in medal positions. From Jasper, Kallen King earned a 6th Place Medal in the 400m; Kendall Diesel earned a 6th Place Medal in the 1600m; and Jasper’s 4x400m Relay Team of Keaton Diesel, Kendall Diesel, Kallen King, and Gavin Duffield earned a 6th Place Medal. New Hope’s Josie Crews also earned a 6th Place Medal in the Discus.

The White Sox came back to beat the Mariners 2-1 in the rubber match of their series. Randal Grichuk homered and Miguel Vargas hit a sacrifice fly in an eighth-inning rally for Chicago. Bryan Hudson got the win in relief, and Seranthony Dominguez secured the save. The White Sox improved to 19-and-21 this season. The Southsiders host the Royals tomorrow night.

The Cardinals led by two entering the bottom of the ninth before Riley O’Brien gave up a pair of runs. Gordon Graceffo was charged with the loss in the relief after allowing the game-winning run in the tenth, while Jordan Walker homered in the losing effort. The Cardinals are in third place in the NL Central at 23-and-17. They visit the Athletics tomorrow night.

(St. Louis, MO) — The St. Louis Battlehawks are on a three-game winning streak following a 31-20 win over the Columbus Aviators from The Dome at America’s Center on Friday. Kylin James rushed for two touchdowns in the victory, while Luis Perez passed for 204 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. St. Louis is tied for first place in the UFL. The Battlehawks host Houston this Saturday.

The Knicks are making their second straight appearance in the conference finals and will face either the Detroit Pistons or the Cleveland Cavaliers in the next round. Elsewhere, the Minnesota Timberwolves tied up their series against the San Antonio Spurs at two games apiece with a 114-109 win in Game Four in Minneapolis. Playoff action continues with a pair of Game Fours today. The Cavaliers will host the Pistons before the Los Angeles Lakers play host the Oklahoma City Thunder.

(Washington, D.C.) — The Wizards are taking home the Number-1 pick in the NBA draft. The team won the lottery on Sunday after finishing with the worst record in the league. The Jazz jumped up two spots to claim the second selection while the Grizzlies rose three positions to nab the third slot. The Bulls blew past five teams to grab fourth while the Pacers dropped three positions to round out the top-five. That pick will head to the Clippers as it fell out of the top-four protected status. The Nets will pick sixth as Brooklyn and Indy sank the same amount of spots after heading into the lottery tied with Washington for the best odds at landing the Number-1 overall pick.

(San Francisco, CA) — The Warriors are bringing back their four-time champion head coach. Golden State is signing Steve Kerr to a two-year contract and he will return for his 13th season leading the team in the fall. The deal will reportedly keep Kerr as the highest-paid coach in the NBA after he made 17.5-million-dollars this past season. Kerr, controlling owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy had multiple meetings in the past two weeks to decide on the coach’s future with the franchise. The 60-year-old is one of only six coaches with at least four NBA titles.

(Chicago, IL) — Fortune was on the side of the Chicago Bulls during the NBA Draft Lottery. The Bulls will pick fourth in next month’s draft. Chicago had the ninth worst record in the NBA last season and had just a 20-percent chance to get into the top-four. The NBA draft gets started with the first round on June 23rd.

Indiana finished the regular season with the second-worst record at 19-and-63, but slipped all the way to the fifth pick following the lottery. The Pacers will now have to trade the fifth overall pick in the 2026 draft to the LA Clippers to complete the trade they made for Ivica Zubac in February.

(Englewood, CO) — The Broncos are locking up the leader of their front office with a new contract. Denver has signed general manager George Paton to a five-year extension that will run through the 2030 season. The 56-year-old was set to enter the final year of a six-year deal he signed when he was hired in 2021. Paton was previously the assistant GM of the Minnesota Vikings for a dozen years before being hired by the Broncos to replace John Elway as the team’s top football executive.

(San Francisco, CA) — The Giants moved on from a key member of their roster over the weekend. San Francisco traded two-time Gold Glove-winning catcher Patrick Bailey to the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for the 29th overall pick in the year’s MLB Draft and left-handed pitching prospect Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson. The 26-year-old Bailey is batting .141 with one home run and five RBIs in 30 games played this season. He has played in 383 games across his four seasons spent in the majors.

The action continues tonight with the Wild hosting the Avalanche in game four of their series. Colorado leads Minnesota two games to one.

(Chicago, IL) — The Chicago Blackhawks are getting some help from across the pond next season. The Hawks signed KHL star Roman Kantserov to an entry-level contract over the weekend. The forward was a second-round pick by Chicago in 2023. Kantserov scored 36 goals and tallied 28 assists in the KHL last season.

(Portland, OR) — The Chicago Sky opened up the 2026 season with a 98-83 win over the Portland Fire from Moda Center on Saturday. The Sky led by as many as 18 points in the victory. Kamila Cardoso scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Skylar Diggins chipped in with 21 points and 11 boards. Chicago visits Golden State on Wednesday.

Reitan finished the tournament 15 under par to win by two strokes. Rickie Fowler and Nicolai Hojgaard were tied for second at 13 under. Alex Fitzpatrick finished fourth at 12 under, and defending champ Sepp Straka was tied for 63rd at three over par.

(Watkins Glen, NY) — Shane van Gisbergen made a late push to win the Go Bowling at the Glen race. The driver of the Number-97 car stormed from the back of the pack over the final 15 laps to earn a victory at Watkins Glen International. Michael McDowell, Ty Gibbs, Chase Briscoe and Tyler Reddick rounded out the top-five finishers. The NASCAR Cup Series takes a break for the All-Star race at Dover next Sunday.
