The Wayne County Board of Review has approved a reduction in the property tax assessment for the Walmart in Fairfield.

Based on current figures, Walmart’s 2025 tax bill payable this year will total $224,837.30, a decrease of more than $72,000 from last year’s bill of $297,165.64.

During a meeting Tuesday, the board voted to reduce the store’s appraised value from $3,221,364 to $2,579,953. Attorneys representing Walmart had requested the assessed value be lowered to $999,900.
Wayne County Supervisor of Assessments Jodi Poole said Walmart’s current full property value stands at $9,664,092. Walmart’s attorneys sought to reduce that value to $3 million, but the request was denied.

Instead, the board used the county’s Computer Assisted Mass Appraisal System to determine the reduced assessment value.

Officials say Walmart’s attorneys plan to appeal the decision to the Illinois Property Tax Appeal Board in Springfield. Poole noted the appeal process can often take several years to complete.
