The Illinois State Police have released additional details after a Raleigh man was charged with murder in connection to the death of an Eldorado teenager.

Authorities say 41-year-old Justin D. Maloney of Raleigh was arrested on three counts of First Degree Murder following what investigators called a homicide investigation initiated by the Saline County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a reported residential burglary in progress shortly after 9 p.m. Wednesday at a home on Chapel Road in Raleigh. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a 16-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound. The teen, identified as Nathaniel Potts—a sophomore at Eldorado High School—was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

After what Illinois State Police described as a “thorough investigation,” Maloney was taken into custody. On Friday, ISP Special Agents presented the case to the Illinois State’s Attorneys Appellate Prosecutor’s Office, which filed three counts of First Degree Murder, a Class M felony.

Maloney made his initial appearance in Saline County Court on Friday morning. Prosecutors have filed a petition for pretrial detention, with a detention hearing set for May 28th.

Maloney remains in custody at the Saline County Jail. Illinois State Police say no further information is being released at this time.
