A Massac County judge has denied pretrial release for George Bradfield, 77, of Owensboro, Kentucky, who is charged in connection with the 1984 murder of Lisa Ann Carnes in Southern Illinois.
Bradfield appeared in Massac County court on Tuesday, where prosecutors sought to deny his release ahead of trial. The judge granted the motion, citing Bradfield as a “real and present threat” to public safety and expressing concerns about his potential flight from prosecution. Bradfield will remain detained as the case proceeds.
During the hearing, the court also addressed attorney communication and medical issues. Weekly pretrial conferences are set to begin June 2nd via Zoom, unless otherwise ordered.
Bradfield was indicted on five counts of murder by a Massac County grand jury on April 22nd. He was arrested in Owensboro and extradited to Southern Illinois. The case is scheduled for a jury trial on July 14th in Massac County.
