UTZ RECALLS POTATO CHIPS OVER POSSIBLE SALMONELLA RISK

By Mark Wells May 28, 2026 | 11:52 AM

Utz Brands is recalling select varieties of its Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips because of a potential salmonella contamination risk tied to seasoning ingredients.

According to the company, the recall involves certain flavors and bag sizes after Utz was notified that milk powder used in some seasoning blends may contain salmonella. The milk powder ingredient had been recalled separately by a supplier. Utz said it is voluntarily recalling the chips out of an abundance of caution, even though testing on the seasonings returned negative results for the bacteria. No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled products.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in young children, elderly individuals, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms in healthy individuals may include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream and lead to more severe conditions. The company advises consumers not to eat the recalled products and to discard them immediately.

Consumers seeking additional information or refunds may contact the Utz Customer Care team by phone at 1-877-423-0149 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern Time.

Retailers have also been instructed to check inventory and remove any affected products from store shelves.

The recall is being conducted with the knowledge of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
